The combination of prismatic refraction of light and the concept of bifocal glasses is the underlying logic of the patented (U.S. Patent No. 5,420,469) BIVU mask. Indeed, analysis of visual acuity, and range of sight, when combined with the limitations of conventional masks, suggests that in typical diving situations, we are effectively "blind" to visually accessing the important equipment attached to the upper body.

As illustrated below, normal eye and head rotation combine for a 95% field of downward acuity. Addition of a mask reduces this field by 15%.



The BIVU solution is to utilize prisms to refract (bend) the light rays back as they pass from air into the denser medium of water. Placing the prisms in a bifocal configuration recovers the 15% field of vision lost to the mask, and allows normal line-of-sight vision for general viewing ... looking over the prisms as with normal reading glasses.

Peripheral side windows serve to further enhance the diver's field of vision.

Like all Oceanic masks, the BIVU is manufactured using high grade, high-impact plastics that ensure close tolerance fits on all components and years of rugged use.
